Class 'costume': please wear a tank or fitted t-shirt, yoga pants
and high heels that you can dance in!
June 1st—Costume Design Theory:
Get up close and personal with the costumes of Penny Starr, Jr,
Princess Farhana, Venus de Mille and Jewel of Denial.
Review the varied burlesque silhouette, contrasting color theory,
camouflage, the “Three Layer Theory” of striptease, review of clasps and
various options of embellishment that won’t break the bank.
June 8th—Embellished Bras and Shimmy Belts:
In this practicum, you supply the bra and we supply the fabric, beaded
trim and shimmy belt form for you to sew. Learn how to cover bra cups and
straps, how to add fringe and basic rhinestone principals. Basic hand sewing
skills will be reviewed and you finish the work at home.
Lab Fee: $45 for 1 1/2 yard of fabric, 3 yds of beaded fringe,
needles, thread, hook and eye and shimmy belt form.
June 14th—FIELDTRIP to LA’s Garment District
special SATURDAY class
Want to learn the in’s and out’s of where to get the best buys
on beaded fringe and swarovski crystals?
For this special fieldtrip, we will be meeting in the garment district
at 10am, armed with Penny’s detailed map of the shops and vendors,
you will be let loose downtown for 2 hours of shopping,
then re-group at noon for lunch at the Tiara Café.
You can use this time to buy extra trim for your costume,
or just as a reconnaissance mission.
June 15th—Tantalizing Tease Techniques
Practicing with your gloves, boa and shimmy belt in ways to create
drama for the audience: how to present the garment before you remove it,
playing peek-a-boo, ‘pop’ versus ‘peel’,
and using the sensuality of the fabrics in your costume.
June 22nd—Pastie Practicum
In this class, you will get your first pair of pasties!
You will learn the various adhesive options and placement, as well as
demonstrating how to embellish store bought pasties and a brief
explanation on how to make your own.
Lab Fee is $15 for pasties, pastie glue, patterns and
materials to make your own.
June 29th—Make-up and Hair:
For the last class, you will learn that the make-up you wear to the office
is not the make-up you wear onstage: from the ‘natural’ stage look,
through ‘porn’ eyes and straight on to drag queen extravaganza, learn how to
make your visage been seen in the back row. Taught by burlesquer and
make-up artist Kat Bardot, learn tips on eyelash application, use of foundation
and body make-up, why using craft glitter on your face is a bad idea
(scratched cornea anyone?). Hair options will include falls and wigs—
where to buy them and how to maintain them.
Lab Fee is $25 dollars for eye shadow, eye glitter,
eye lashes and glue (bring your own foundation).
